Reminds me a lot of that Kutcher vs. CNN twitter race - isn't it hurting twitter more than helping? I opted to leave them out of the post because it seemed their account admin realized that the idea wasn't the greatest and he said he wouldn't do it again in the future. The real victims of the poor judgement call are the people in Haiti who could use the immediate donations. I have come across several people on Twitter using that tactic: Follow Me And I'll Donate To Haiti! I consider it holding donations hostage: like, I won't release my donation unless and until you Follow me. It's one of the WORST uses of social media I have seen. I'm glad to see people donating, but "buying" Followers seems a) crass; b) a significant time-waster (why not just donate the damn money instead of waiting for Followers?) and c)a sad way to try to "profit" - look, Ma, I got me more Followers! - in the wake of a tragedy and crisis of historical proportions. When I see someone do it on Twitter, I've tried to engage in dialogue with the person. They may even do it with the best of intentions, thinking it's a cool social media way of engaging, raising consciousness, and increasing Followers at the same time.
